Lament
Listen: MP3

I woke to see the Master, full of agony.
"Could you not watch one hour and pray?"
The garden bleak, He said, "It is complete.
Behold, my betrayer comes to take me away."
I rose at this to see the traitor plant his kiss
Upon the weary face. I drew my sword,
and struck, and fled that place.

How can I be called a rock
When my desertion scorns and mocks
The love He showed to me before?
He gives His life. I seek my own.
The cock's cry echoes through my bones,
And nothing matters anymore.

I followed in that dirge-like procession
    to the place
Where men pass judgment from on high.
The outer court: I could follow Him no more,
And had to stand among the rabble by a fire.
They stared at me,
said, "Surely, this man's from Galilee."
I shook my fist at them,
    and swore by God's name
I knew not the Man.

How can I be called a rock
When my desertion scorns and mocks
The love He showed to me before?
He gives His life. I seek my own.
The cock's cry echoes through my bones,
And nothing matters anymore.

I curse the day that I was born.
The Son of God hangs bruised and torn
Between two thieves upon a tree.
If He declines to save His life,
What hope is there for humankind,
And least of all a wretch like me?
